Eva (Burgard) and Harry Lazarus, both of whom had emigrated from Russia, to
Canada, and finally to the United States.
Dorothy remained a resident of the “City of Angels” throughout her life, where she
established meaningful, life-long friendships. She and her friends grew up when L.A.
was a young and growing city; they enjoyed evening walks to the movies, ice cream
at C.C. Brown’s in Hollywood, and dancing at the Coconut Grove in the Ambassador
Hotel.
During a family trip to Montreal, Quebec, she met her future husband, Charles
Robert Cohen, a navigation officer with the Royal Canadian Air Force. They wrote
throughout his service in England, and married on September 1, 1945.
Their honeymoon in Yosemite initiated many traditions for Dorothy and Chuck’s
family, including trips to Sequoia and King’s Canyon National Park, Leo Carrillo State
Park, and road trips along the California coast.
Dorothy nurtured her family with intention, and regularly planned excursions to the
library, museums, movies, and theater. As her children became more independent,
she set goals for personal growth, completing her A.A. in art at Los Angeles City
College, and later becoming a medical-office assistant, and finally assistant to the
executive director of Stephen S. Wise Temple for over 20 years. Upon retirement,
she was a docent at the Getty Museum and the Skirball Cultural Center.
She loved deeply, and was deeply loved. She left a legacy to find beauty in all things:
in nature, in art, in literature, in film, and, most especially, in family. She taught her
children always to look up, look out, look within, and remember to truly see.
She is survived by her sister, Shirley, her children, Nan (Paul) Feldon, Keith Cohen, Andrea
(Michael Bracha) Cohen, and Jan (Mario) Iscovich; grandchildren, Jenny Sonbolian, Jon
Feldon, Jess Feldon, Adam Lass, Tai Howard, Alena Cohen, Joshua Iscovich and Natalie
Iscovich. She was also blessed with seven great-grand children: Eva, Noah, Dashiell, Harlan,
Clara, Margot, and Joshua.
