Michael Brian Burns

It is with heavy hearts that the Burns family announces the passing of Michael Brian Burns, 75, on April 30, 2021. Michael was born in Cambridge, MA on Feb. 4, 1946 to Margaret Isabelle (nee Beaton) and Edward Francis Burns. Due to COVID-19 restrictions his wife and daughter could not be with him throughout his illness. Both were able to be with him to share in his final moments.

Michael leaves memories to be cherished by his wife of 50 years, Maureen F. Burns of Shoreham, NY and his daughter Maura K. Burns (John N. Hubbard) of Oyster Bay, NY. He is also survived by his brother Edward Burns (Michele) of Cocoa Beach, FL, sisters Kathy Torrell (Arthur) of Wycoff, NJ, Mary Sheila Carbone (Jack) of Reston, VA, Margaret Atkinson (Alex) of Hampton, GA; brothers-in-law James F. Burke, III (Stephanie) of Miller Place, NY, Terrence Burke (Lynn) of Port Jefferson, NY; his sisters-in-law Barbara Gans of Murrells Inlet, SC, Brenda Hunt, Colchester, VT, Patricia Przybylinski (Richard) of West Charleston, VT and Catherine Noel (James) of Columbia, MO. Michael is survived by many nieces and nephews and his godson Patrick Vaughan (Isabel) of Canterbury, NH. Michael is predeceased by his parents, his brothers-in-law Gary Gans and Brian Hunt, sister-in-law Carol Klebanoff (Gary), and his niece Kara Klebanoff.

Michael was a loving husband and proud, caring father. Both his immediate and extended families were most important to him. He cherished strong and joyful relationships with his friends. Michael considered Dr. B. James and Susan Vaughan of East Hampton, NY as part of his extended family. He held a special regard for his golf buddies. Most importantly, Michael absolutely loved his home. It was his happy place.

He was employed by the company formerly known as Long Island Lighting Company/Keyspan, now known as National Grid for 34 years. Michael served 3 years of active duty in the United States Army stationed in Germany and served 17 years in the Army National Guard in Riverhead, NY. He retired as Chief Warrant Officer CW2.

The family is appreciative of Michael’s exceptional treatment team at the Stony Brook Heart Institute, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and the care he received in his final days at The Hamlet Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Nesconset, NY.

In lieu of flowers, take a drive on a sunny day with your windows rolled down and 60’s music blasting. This simple act always brought a smile to Michael’s face.
