Jane was born in Newark, NJ and grew up in North Plainfield. She met her husband Robert Murphy and married in 1962. She was a commercial artist and mother, graduating from Pratt Institute with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1955. She then began her career working as a display designer for Macy's at Herald Square. After a hiatus to raise her three children, she returned to the workforce and continued as a display designer for Miller Mohr Inc. She begrudgingly retired at the age of 80 as a part time employee with the Suffolk County Cooperative Library.
Jane had a curious mind, love for life and people, wonderful sense of humor, and warmth beyond measure. There were never enough hours in the day for all she wanted to learn and accomplish. She was very engaged in the world around her – and that made her extremely interesting as anyone who ever met her can attest. Whether it be gardening, sewing, knitting or baking, she approached everything with the detailed eye of an artist, even perfecting the Ukrainian Art of Pysanky. In the moments of time she had left over, she also volunteered with a community literacy organization, freely sharing her love of the spoken and written word.
She is preceded in death by her husband Robert, her father Joseph Price, her mother Margaret Kearney, and siblings Mary, Jack, Joseph, and Margaret. Jane is survived by her three children, Robert Murphy (Susan Murphy), Margaret Murphy (Kevin Karjala) and MaryJane Murphy, and granddaughter, Molly Murphy.
A memorial mass for Jane will be held Monday, June 24, 2024 at 10:30 AM at Saint Anthony's of Padua Church, 614 Rte 25A, Rocky Point, NY 11778. Following the memorial mass will be an interment at 12:30 PM at Calverton National Cemetery.
