Nancy Morgan passed away on January 13, 2021, in her home in Salt Lake City, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Nancy was born on March 3, 1949, in Los Alamos, New Mexico, to Elmo Rich and Frances Bennion Morgan. Nancy spent her early years in Los Alamos and Salt Lake City, and then moved to the Bay Area, where she lived until college.
Nancy attended the University of Utah, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy. After graduating, she married Craig Leymaster and together they had four children. They lived in San Diego, California and Boise, Idaho. Following their divorce, Nancy returned to Salt Lake, where she raised her four young children. Nancy returned to school, earning her Master’s in Special Education, with an emphasis on the birth to five population. Nancy had a passion for providing quality educational opportunities for underprivileged children. After working for several years in this capacity, Nancy discovered her true career-calling while working as an instructional coach for early education teachers. She continued in this role until her retirement, and stayed on as a consultant afterward. Her commitment to learning extended throughout her life.
Nancy faced numerous challenges during her life, which provided her with a depth of understanding and compassion she might not otherwise have had. Living in different places allowed her to broaden her growth and meet people from diverse backgrounds. Nancy made friends wherever she went, ranging in age from 5 to 95 years old. Her wisdom, compassion, kindness, quiet strength and sense of humor drew people to her. She often showed her thoughtfulness and encouragement to others through handwritten cards and letters. Those heartfelt notes are cherished by many.
Nancy lived a life of integrity, and her faith and commitment to the gospel was apparent in her everyday life. She served in many capacities, not only as a mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend, but also has a missionary in the Oklahoma, Oklahoma City Mission and at the LDS Church History Museum. One of her favorite church callings was to serve as Primary President later in life. She sincerely loved the children and considered them friends. The legacies she leaves behind will always be remembered and cherished.
We want to extend a heart-felt thank you to Nancy’s doctors, nurses, social workers and medical staff at Huntsman Cancer Institute. We also want to thank her extended family, friends and neighbors for the tender service they provided during her last years.
Nancy is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her brothers Kent (Lynne) Morgan and Tony (Mary Ann) Morgan, and by her children Amy (David) Smith, Sarah Leymaster, David (Anne) Leymaster, Megan (Doug) Archibald, and by her 12 grandchildren.
