John Nelson Calhoun passed away peacefully on the evening of November 27, 2015. Dad was born on August 6, 1928 in Kemmerer, WY. The first of two children to Judd M. and Idella Nelson Calhoun. (Later divorced). His mother married Orren L. (Pug) Pugmire in 1937. Dad always considered Pug his father.
Dad was raised in the Kemmerer and the upper Hamsfork area where he learned the value of hard work at an early age from his step dad and Nelson grandpa and uncles. He served his country in the US Army -40th infantry division- during the Korean War.
Dad met and married Beverly A. Lauck in 1955 (later divorced). To this union were born 5 children.
Among the many hats dad wore during his life were those of construction worker, school bus driver, truck driver, ranch hand, coal miner, cattle rancher, trucking company owner and custom hay contractor. The hat that fit him best however was that of father and friend.
A big thank you goes to the many dedicated and professional care givers at Heritage Park Care Center in Roy, Utah, where dad resided over the last 1 ½ years.
Survived by his children, Troy (Kathy), Deena (Neil), Ben (Janet), and Scott (Sissy), 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and longtime companion LaVonne Redhair. Preceded in death by his father, mother, stepdad, sister Ann M. Ginn and son Clayton J. Calhoun.
Funeral services with military honors will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive Salt Lake City, Utah on Friday, December 4, 2015 at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held Thursday from 6:00-8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service.
