POWERS, Shelby Brumbles, of Richmond, Va., died Tuesday, January 7, 2014, after giving cancer a run for its money. Shelby was born September 19, 1939 in Lumberton, N.C. She was preceded in death by her parents, Truss and Dula Brumbles, and her sister, Ann Bundy Dyer. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Earl "Ray" Powers; a son Daniel Powers and his wife, Katie and grandson, Mason, of Richmond; a daughter, Renee Powers Allgood and Jon Bright, of Charlottesville; a granddaugther, Caroline Allgood Kigans and husband Dean Kigans, of Richmond; a nephew, Brandon Bundy and Leslie Norman, of Richmond; special sister, Sandra Eads, and many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. We are grateful for the tender care she received from Kendall Sloope. Shelby was a sharpshooter, race car driver, ballroom dancer, entrepreneur, wife and mother. Shelby set her sights on the cutest boy on the basketball team and married him on January 12, 1957. Ray and Shelby moved to Richmond shortly thereafter. Shelby began working in the optical industry in 1962. She was very proud to be a licensed optician for 40 years. She worked hard for the advancement of opticianry. She served two terms as Chairman of the State Licensing Board. If you knew Shelby, then you were loved, because she felt that friends are the family that you get to choose. The family will receive friends Friday, January 10, 2014 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd. A celebration of Shelby's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2014, also at Woody Funeral Home. Interment will be at Dale Memorial Park.
