James Russell Hughes

On the morning of December 23, 2022, James “Jim” Russell Hughes passed away peacefully in Midlothian, Virginia. Cherished husband of 53 years to Susan Elizabeth (Simpson). Extraordinary father of Emily Williams (Craig) of Midlothian, Virginia and Julia Lattanzio (John) of Charlotte, North Carolina. Beloved grandfather to Abigail Ann Williams and James Richard Lattanzio. Born in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1941, Jim was born a true leader, inspiring many with a quiet confidence. Following his graduation from Annapolis High School in 1959, Jim enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He then pursued a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland when upon graduation, he returned to proudly serve twice as a platoon commander during the Vietnam War. Always the achiever, Jim went on to earn two master’s degrees from the University of Southern California. He retired as the rank of Major in 1982 and tapped into his entrepreneurial spirit, successfully running his own business. In 1969, he married the love of his life, Susan. Together they made wonderful memories. Living in California, Hawaii, Illinois, North Carolina and Virginia, they made lifelong friends along the way. They proudly raised two beautiful girls, Emily and Julia. In raising their family, Susan and Jim built a life they loved. Jim lived a life of service and love. He was the best friend, father and husband—truly cut from a different cloth. He was one who could always tell a good joke or story. He loved the ocean and salt air and believed either of these could solve most of life’s problems. He was never one to turn down a delicious oyster, a well-made Manhattan, or a chance to dance to his favorite songs. He was an avid athlete and commonly known as “The Machine” to those that helped train him through the years. He was a man who valued every individual who crossed his path. Jim truly loved life. Those who crossed his path will forever treasure his memory, love and friendship. His strength and kindness were immeasurable, and his legacy will endure through his beloved family. Interment will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
