His parents were Alfred Thomas Newbold and Glee Eunice Doolittle Newbold. He is also preceded in death by his wife Lois (they were married 63 plus years) and his brothers, William Charles and James Lucas.
Tom is survived by his daughters, Janet (Paul) Ellis of Lubbock, TX and Pamela Jo (John) Johansen of Vernon, TX; his sons, Richard Alfred of El Paso, TX and David Ross (Tammie) of Midland; his sister-in-law Dorothy (Bishop) Richards; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Tom grew up in Washington, D.C., Silver Springs, and Bethesda, Maryland. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C. in 1937 and from The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut in 1939. He attended Benjamin Franklin University and Gregg Shorthand School in Washington, D.C. He also studied with LaSalle Correspondence School. On January 2, 1943, Tom married Annie Lois Richards in Washington, D.C. For a few months, in 1945 and 1946, Tom and his family lived in Kalamazoo, Michigan where he worked as an office manager for a cement block plant owned by his father who was in the building business.
Tom and family moved to Midland, Texas in 1947 where he was employed at Texas Electric Service Company. He worked there for 35 years, retiring in 1982. Tom and Lois were among the 193 people who organized Westminster Presbyterian Church in Midland in 1952; later in 1972, it became Trinity Presbyterian Church. He served as Elder, Deacon, and Trustee, taught Sunday school, and served on two building campaigns. He was also a frequent representative to Presbytery meetings and once attended General Assembly.
In 1952, Boy Scout Troop126 was formed and sponsored by the church. Tom served on various committees and was Scoutmaster for several years. He was fortunate to be able to attend Philmont Scout Ranch, once as Scout Commissioner, and once as Webelo Leader. During his scouting career, he attended many adult Scout leader training sessions and the College of Commissioner Science. He was a fifty year Scouter, was awarded the Silver Beaver, and was a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow. He also served as District Commissioner and as camp manager at Buffalo Trail Council Camp for two summers. Later, he was a member of the Midland Downtown Lion’s Club.
Tom served in the U.S. Army at Fort Myer, Virginia beginning in 1942 and was assigned to the Recruiting and Induction Station. The unit was later relocated to Fort Meade, Maryland as a Separation Center. In 1950, Uncle Sam said “I need you back;” so Tom worked in the Officer’s Reception Section at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.
There will be a visitation at Ellis Funeral Home on Friday, February 24, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Resthaven Memorial Park on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church Chapel at 2:00 p.m. with Mary Beth Anton officiating.
