Susan was born on April 25, 1956, in Summit, New Jersey. She was the youngest of three children and only daughter to C. Wallace (“Wally”) and Carolyn Craig.
The family moved to New Orleans before eventually settling in Midland in 1960. Growing up, Susan was a member of the Girl Scouts and loved to spend time with her friends.
Susan graduated from Midland High School in 1974. She attended Oklahoma University and was a member of Gamma Theta chapter of Kappa Delta sorority. She later earned her degree in History from Barat College in Illinois.
In 1979, Susan moved to Dallas and began working for Southwest Airlines, where she was hired as one of the airline’s first 400 flight attendants. It was during this time she met her former husband, Dennis Mahoney. After ten years of working for Southwest, Susan left her career to be a stay-at-home mom to their son, Daniel. The family moved to Chicago and Denver before eventually settling in the Philadelphia area.
Susan worked at Downingtown East High School and West Chester University in Pennsylvania before moving back to Midland in 2014. She was actively involved in the MHS alumni community and was planning the Class of 1974’s 50th reunion at the time of her death.
Susan was a smart, savvy, and sharp woman who loved learning and was well-educated in many areas of life. She enjoyed Civil War history, gardening, astrology, true crime, and mystery. She also loved traveling to the Texas Hill Country, happy hours with her girlfriends, and a quiet night at home with her beloved cat, Lucky. Although she had many interests in life, her greatest joy was being a mom to her son, Daniel.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Wally and Carol Craig.
She is survived by her son Daniel Mahoney and his partner Heather Rameau of Washington, D.C.; her brother and sister-in-law Mark and Christy Craig of Houston, Texas; her brother Wallace Craig of Midland, Texas; three nieces; several cousins; her dear group of girlfriends; and her beloved 19-year-old cat, Lucky.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life for Susan on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Ellis Resthaven Funeral Home and Memorial Park located at 4616 N Big Spring St, Midland, Texas 79705.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Susan’s honor to the American Battlefield Trust as she enjoyed visiting our nation’s battlefields, or to the Lone Star Sanctuary for Animals as she had a special love for animals, particularly cats.
