Janet Williams Koonce was born on March 11, 1940 in Lamesa, TX to parents Orbie Lee and Annie Lee Williams. She passed away on June 13, 2014 at her home surrounded by family and friends; following a brief bout with Leukemia.
Janet grew up in and around Midland and attended Midland High School and Ft. Stockton High School. She joined Calvary Baptist Church at age 11 and later transferred her membership to Cotton Flat Baptist Church.
In 1957, she married Norman Koonce and they raised three children. Janet’s main profession was as a bookkeeper and she worked with several of the early oil and gas companies in Midland most notably Leede Exploration and Ford Chapman Production.
Janet “retired” in the mid 1990’s and spent the rest of her time traveling with Norman and hosting sleepovers and pool parties for her five grandsons at the family farm near Gardendale. Grandmom’s house was the center of activity for almost all holidays; and Christmas time was the main event as Janet spent weeks decorating the inside of the house for the big day.
Janet was a member of the Purple Sage Chapter of The Ninety-Nines – The International Organization of Woman Pilots and piloted a Cessna 172. She was active in the Midland Odessa Christian Women’s Organization where she attended monthly luncheons and bible studies.
Janet is survived by her son, Gary Koonce and wife Cindy; daughter, Janna Quattlebaum and husband Robert; five grandsons, Byron Koonce, Phillip Koonce, Cole Quattlebaum, Blake Quattlebaum, and Gentry Quattlebaum, all of Midland; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of special friends spanning a lifetime.
She is predeceased by her husband, Norman Koonce; son, Dale Wade Koonce; her parents, Orbie and Annie Williams; her siblings, Judy Rogers, Stan Williams and Jean Chambliss.
Pallbearers will be Gary, Byron and Phillip Koonce; Robert, Cole, Blake and Gentry Quattlebaum.
A visitation will be held at Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Highway, Midland, TX on Sunday, June 15, 2014 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. A service will be held at Ellis Funeral Home on Monday, June 16, 2014 at 11:00 am with a graveside to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the West Texas Boys Ranch or the charity of your choice.
