Ronnie E. Carter, 87, of Miamisburg, Ohio, passed away June 5, 2023, at Hospice of Dayton, where he received tremendous care until the end. He was born Aug. 6, 1935, on a Preble County farm to Arthur and Lillie (Leggett) Carter.
Ronnie was a graduate of West Elkton High School in Preble County, where he met the love of his life, Janice Joy Hines. They were married in 1954 and celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary last month.
Besides raising a family that was a centerpiece of their lives, Ronnie and Janice enjoyed a lifetime of travel together. It began in the 1960s, when they would go on adventures with Janice’s parents, Columbus and Fannie Hines, spending several weeks at a time rambling much of the eastern half of the U.S. in a travel trailer. The Southeast coast and upper Michigan were among the most notable destinations.
Their travels eventually would take them to all but two states, North and South Dakota. Together, they enjoyed five Caribbean cruises, two Alaskan cruises and three riverboat cruises. On one Riverboat cruise, Ronnie was able to spend time chatting, much to his delight, with special guests and baseball Hall of Famers Stan Musial, Bob Feller and Enos Slaughter. On another cruise, the trip followed the path originally charted by Lewis and Clark on the Columbia River.
Over the past 25 years, Ronnie and Janice also enjoyed annually extended family vacations at the Outer Banks. They even were able to take a final trip last month, spending a week on Torch Lake in upper Michigan.
Ronnie was an avid sports fan, starting with the following of his father-in-law Columbus Hines’ great New Lebanon Dixie basketball teams of the 1960s, which won state championships in 1962 and 1966. The games were an event for the entire family, and never to be missed.
Through the years, he received much enjoyment from following the Reds and Bengals, dating to attending games when the Reds played at Crosley Field. He also closely followed a number of area college basketball and football teams. Starting in the early 1990s, Ronnie and Janice became Bengals season ticket holders, keeping their seats for about 20 years. During that time, they also joined with a group of fans to start traveling to away games, making nearly two dozen trips.
Ronnie could do almost any kind of work with his hands, and did much of the work on the family country home that he built in the mid-1970s outside of Middletown. Ronnie and Janice lived there for nearly 50 years. He also spent a lifetime helping family and friends, whether it was moving furniture, fixing cars or repairing almost anything.
Ronnie’s first serious job was at National Cash Register in Dayton, where eventually he was asked to leave after he had parked his car in a spot reserved for the president of the company. He never failed to smile when the story was told. Soon after, he started working at AK Steel, where he spent 38 years, serving many years as a foreman. After retiring from AK Steel, he spent 17 years doing special projects around the country for Harbinson Walker, a steel industry supplier.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Gault and brother, Rodney Carter.
Ronnie is survived by his wife of 69 years, Janice Carter; children, Ron (Kimberly) Carter, Joseph (Rebecca) Carter and Michelle (Rod) Anderson; grandchildren, Rachel (Brian) Palmer, Jay Carter, Nicole Pittman, Brittany Byrum, Brandon Anderson, Benjamin Anderson, Brian (Kelsey) Anderson and six great grandchildren.
Visitation will be 2-4 pm on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Anderson Funeral Home, 40 North Main Street, Springboro, OH 45066. A Celebration of Life will follow at 4pm with Conrad Flowers officiating.
