Arthur Raymond Root, Jr., age 86, died December 1, 2017 in Redding CA. He was born September 15, 1931, in Middletown, OH. An exposure to the greater Miami River Valley paper industries formed the basis for his life-long career in paper making. Graduating as a Chemical Engineer from the University of Cincinnati in 1954, he had already spent 5 years co-opting in various technical positions with local paper companies prior to filling his first position in paper research with the Champion Paper Company in Hamilton, OH. He subsequently moved into paper mill operations and was transferred to Shasta County, CA, in 1964, as part of the start-up management team for Kimberly Clark’s Shasta Pulp & Paper Mill in Anderson. He moved his family to nearby Redding, CA. Retiring from the now Simpson Paper Company’s Shasta Mill in 1992, he completed his 42-year career in pulp and papermaking. He belonged to many paper-oriented organizations, but held his affiliation with Redding East Rotary and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity as his most prized. He greatly enjoyed playing golf with his four sons, woodworking, and adult Pinewood Derby Racing. He is preceded in death by his parents Arthur R. Root, Sr. and Carolyn E. Eisenmenger, and a son David. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Joyce Auerbach, sons Michael and Steven of OK, Christopher of NM, John of NV, 8 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. He loved his family and will be greatly missed. Burial at Woodside Cemetery, Middletown, OH.
