ROBERT (Bob) DAVID STUBBS, JR, passed in his sleep on May 16th, he was 96 years young. Born in Montgomery, Alabama, May 13th, 1920, he moved to Miami as a young boy. He started playing tennis in his teens and worked his way up to winning the Championship Cup for The Professional Singles of the United States in 1947, 1948 and 1949. After winning the championship three years in a row, Robert retained the trophy. This historic trophy contains names like Fredrick Perry, William Tilden, Donald Budge, etc. He put on exhibitions with well known names like Gardner Malloy, Bobby Riggs, Poncho Gonzales, Poncho Segura, Don Budge, Lloyd Budge and many more famous tennis players. Poncho Segura used to call Bob “big bird” and his daughter Sandra, “little bird”. They both had long legs. Bob started his tennis teaching career teaching at the Kennebunk Port County Club in Maine, taught at the Fox Meadow Country Club in Scarsdale, New York, Manursing Island Country Club in Rye, New York. He lived in Miami in the winter running his own automobile business and taught tennis in the summer months. He was a charter member of the Royal Palm Tennis Club. He continued to play in the PLTA and the oldest member in the USPTA. He played in the sponsored USPTA championships up into his 80’s winning all his classes. Bob was well known as “Junior” to most of his tennis buddies. He stayed close friends with Gardner Malloy putting on exhibitions on Fisher Island. He loved fishing and was also an avid golfer. Bob ended his teaching career at the Bath Club on the Beach. He taught there for many years. Robert is predeceased by his wife, Pat Stubbs and Robert Timothy Stubbs, his son.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Stubbs and Sean David Stubbs, his grandson. His last 2 years of his life, Robert was cared for by his dedicated caregiver Suzy, who never left his side and cared for him like her father until the very end.
