Mirta Alvarez, 72, of Miami, Florida, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2024, at 4:50 a.m., surrounded by her loving family after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.
Mirta was born on December 9, 1952, in Güines, Province of Havana, Cuba. At the age of 14, she immigrated to the United States on October 12, 1967, with dreams of a brighter future. She attended Robert E. Lee Middle School and graduated from Miami Senior High School in 1971. Mirta pursued higher education at Miami-Dade Community College (1972-1974) and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in psychology, cum laude, from the University of Florida, Gainesville (1974-1976).
Mirta began her professional career in real estate at Context Realty Development (1976-1982) before discovering her true calling: teaching. Over the course of her 40-year career as an educator, she left a profound impact on her students and colleagues. Mirta began her teaching journey at Centro Mater and later continued at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic School (1983-2000) and St. Kevin Catholic School (2000-2014). Her classrooms were known as places of inspiration, compassion, and love, where her influence will continue to be felt for generations.
Mirta was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was known for her kindness, generosity, and radiant smile. She was the heart of her family and a beacon of love and strength to all who knew her.
Mirta is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Pedro Felix Alvarez; her children, Evelyn Marie Argenal (née Alvarez Acosta), Peter Felix Alvarez Jr., Lannie Frances Alvarez, and Ashley Marie Alvarez; and her grandchildren, Maria Paula Alvarez, Abigail Alyssa Argenal, Adam Alexander Argenal, Aaron Andrew Argenal, and Isaac Peter Alvarez. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sergio Acosta Gorrin and Mirta Garcia Rodriguez de Acosta.

Interment: Following the Mass, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery, 11411 NW 25th Street, Doral, FL 33172.
