Juan was born on January 31st, 1947, in Cotorro Havana, Cuba to Carmelina and Antonio “Machito” Guzman. When he was 15 yrs. old, his family sent him to live in Miami, FL. Juan was one of the thousands of boys that were part of Operation “Peter Pan.” A clandestine exodus of over 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban minors to the United States in search of freedom from the oppressive communist regime. Juan and Maria Perez met in 1962, the same year he moved from Cuba. They met while living in the same block, 5 houses apart. They later married in 1969, after Juan served 2 years in the Armed Forces, to which one year was served fighting in the Vietnam War. An honor he held very near and dear to his heart.
Juan is a revered husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend who served his family and friends with dedication and love. He was an avid music lover and collector who enjoyed cooking and above all, making Thanksgiving dinner for his family. He was known for his quick wit, love of storytelling, his infectious laugh, and his kind and compassionate spirit. A diehard football fan whose teams were the Florida State Seminoles and the Miami Dolphins, Juan enjoyed fishing, camping, nature, and spending time with his adored grandchildren. He loved all things Disney and believed in fantasy and magic. He was a romantic and a dreamer.
Juan is survived by his wife Maria, his daughter, Telsys, his sisters Elba and Elsy, nieces, Ibis and Dayalin and grandchildren, Elyse and Angelo. A celebration of life gathering will be held on Tuesday, October 4th, 2022, at the Caballero Rivero Westchester from 6pm – 11pm.
