Larry Joseph Schneider passed away on Monday, May 13 at his home in Old Metairie at the age of 78. He was born on August 17, 1945, in New Orleans, LA and attended St. Catherine of Siena, then Jesuit High School where he was an elite athlete. Playing football, and of course, baseball, Larry earned all-district honors, then went on to play third base for the Tulane Green Wave. After graduating from Tulane University, Larry began his 40-year career as a high school History teacher and champion baseball coach. He led the Rummel Raiders to four state championships in 1974, 1981, 1987, and 1989, in addition to six Catholic League titles. Coach Schneider won over 1000 games between his prep and legion career. He has been inducted into the Greater New Orleans Sugar Bowl Hall of Fame, the Louisiana High School Hall of Fame, and the Archbishop Rummel Athletic Hall of Fame. He was twice selected as Class 5A Coach of the Year and named the Southeast United States Baseball Coach of the Year.
Larry enjoyed fishing, playing golf, country music, eating good food and his annual summer vacations in the mountains of North Carolina.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ione Schneider.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Teri, who he would have been married to for 55 years at the end of this month. In addition, he is survived by his three children, Lori (Greg), Larry (Julie) and Diana (Ben), as well as his brothers Dennis (Nancy) and Don, and nephews Jeff, Ryan and Tim (Kayla).
He was known to most as ‘Coach’ or ‘Big Larry’, but his favorite title was ‘Coco’ affectionally named by his grandchildren. After retirement from his impressive career, his greatest joy in life was being a grandfather to Jack, Emma, Ellie, Maggie and Sam.
The world has lost a supportive friend, honorable teacher and mentor, respected coach, devoted husband, loving father, and adoring grandfather.
A true legend.
Friends and family are invited to attend funeral services on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at St. Catherine of Siena Church, located at 105 Bonnabel Blvd., Metairie, LA. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 AM.
