Warren Clifford Smith

Warren Clifford Smith "Smitty", 83, passed away April 18, 2016 in Mesa, AZ; he was born December 11, 1932 in Chicago, IL to John and Ann [Mack] Smith. Warren might not have worn his heart on his sleeve, but deep down he was a kind and gentle spirit who had a love for his family and for animals, particularly Great Danes -- especially his best friends Lance and Sin. He enjoyed feeding the birds in his yard, and was even known to feed the squirrels by hand.

During his younger years he was an avid dancer; his favorite dance being the Jitterbug.

Warren proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a cook during the Korean War, and after his discharge continued to cook for his family.

Following his service, Warren went to work as an Illinois State Trooper. Shortly after, he took over the popular tavern on Roosevelt and Circle in Forest Park, Illinois, known best as The Zoo and then Smitty's, which he owned and operated for several years.

Last of all, Warren served over a decade as a towing inspector for the Illinois Commerce Commission, until his retirement in 2001.

Warren was preceded in death by his sister Faith Lawyer and is survived by his daughters Caryn Smith and Rhondelle (Tom) Ring; son Eric Battersby; and his nieces Colette, Laurel, Cheryl as well as his nephew Craig. He will be dearly, dearly missed by those fortunate enough to have known him.
