Sam was born in West Liberty, Ohio on March 2, 1936. Sam graduated from West Liberty High School. He was married to Carolyn Sue Hunter on May 2, 1958 in Urbana, Ohio, First Church of the Nazarene.
Sam had a career in aviation for Trans World Airlines for 38 years. He was a member of the Machinists Union, and had a passion for sports, especially baseball.
He was survived by his children; Randy Hartzler, Todd Hartzler, and Kaylene Larson (Gary Larson), his grandchildren; Christopher Hartzler, Brandi Larson, and Amber Larson, his great-grandchild; Evie Stoddard-Hartzler, his siblings; Paul Hartzler (Suzanne Hartzler), and many nieces and nephews.
