Chief Michael Lynn Dukes loved his life in the naval infantry and was honored to serve his country. He retired after 32 years.
Michael Lynn Dukes was born to the Late Callie and Annie Dukes on March 29, 1958, in Highland Park, Michigan. His journey in this life ended on Saturday, October 12, 2024.
Michael was the product of a military life. His father was a career serviceman in the US Army, which exposed him to the protocols of military life and his travels to Kansas, Germany, New York, and California. Upon graduation from Mumford High School, Detroit, Michigan, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, served for 12 years with an honorable discharge, and served in the U.S. Naval Reserves for 20 years.
Michael’s career included three tours of duty in Afghanistan and posts in Camp Le June, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, Australia, Korea, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and San Diego. He completed military coursework at Defense Acquisition University and Embry Riddle Aero University and attended the University of Phoenix for General Studies.
Michael received numerous accommodations and awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Services Commendation Medal, the Navy & Marine Corp Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Naval Reserve Sea Service Ribbon, the Armed Forces Reserved Medal, the Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation Badge, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
After his retirement, Michael volunteered with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. He also shared his passion for cultural food with his family and friends and continued his international travels.
Michael is survived by his two daughters, Nascella Dukes Castro and Calana A. Dukes; his sisters, Trinee Moore (Michael) and Sharon J. Dukes; and his grandson, Airforce Technical. Sgt. Isaiah W. Bailey (Andrea), his niece Amanda Moore, and nephews Adrian Dukes, Hamilton Moore, Stephen Dukes, Loren Dukes, and his great-nephews Aden S. Dukes and Messiah D. Moore. Michael was preceded in death by his brother, Alvin S. Dukes.
