Marie L. Hopwood

Marie Louise Hopwood passed away on July 5, 2015 in Mesa, Arizona. Marie was born in Lansing, Michigan to Alphonse and Julia Vogler. At a young age her family relocated to Bronx, New York. At the start of World War II, Marie was employed at the local Draft Board.

On May 16, 1945 Marie married George, the love of her life, at Holy Cross Church in Bronx, New York. They spent 68 wonderful years together. Marie and George made their family complete by having 4 sons.

As her family began to grow up, Marie went back to work as a Dental Assistant at the office of Dr. Alfred Sforza in Huntington, New York. This business relationship developed into a lifelong family friendship with the Sforza family.

Focusing on the family was important to Marie. The focus became even more important as her children grew up and blessed her with grandchildren. Spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren was a bright point in Marie’s life. She loved to cook for her family and everyone raved about her German potato salad.

Marie and George loved to travel. They were able to visit every state in the United States. Alaska and Hawaii were among some of their favorite destinations. Traveling abroad was also an exciting adventure for them. This included trips throughout Europe, where they particularly loved visiting France, England, and Germany.

While living in Sunland Village, Marie and George joined the bowling league. She and George also kept active in community events like the Telephone Pioneers. Marie and George were part time residents in the Starlight Pines rim community, where she actively participated in the Starlighters’ organization.

Marie was preceded in death by her loving husband George, and their eldest son Thomas. She is survived by her sons George Hopwood, James Hopwood, Martin (Cheryl) Hopwood, daughter-in-law Nancy Hopwood, 5 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 12, 2015 from 5 – 8 pm at Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park & Funeral Care, 6747 East Broadway Road, Mesa, Arizona 85206 (480)830-4422. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, July 13, 2015 at Holy Cross Church, 1244 South Power Road, Mesa, Arizona 85206 followed by interment at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 North Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Arizona 85024.
