Born June 5, 1929 in Hinsdale, Il, daughter of George Hendrie Brodie and Jean Malone Brodie. Dorothy graduated Lyons Township High School in 1946, Swarthmore College with a BA with Honors in English in 1950, and Northwestern Law School in 1954. She met Milton Charles Clarke over crossword puzzles worked together congenially in class at Northwestern, and they married in La Grange, Ill in 1955.
Dorothy taught law briefly at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School, and, after moving to Kansas City, MO, simultaneously taught law and filled the shoes of Law Librarian at the University of Kansas City (now UMKC) Law School, until 1961. Subsequently Dorothy contributed to West Publications law school textbooks. Active as an Elder in Ward Parkway Presbyterian Church and as a member on the Committee for Preparation for Ministry of the area presbytery. Dorothy also participated in Church Women United. A much-loved Jewish Community Center Swim Team parent and Girl Scout leader, Dorothy also participated in The Barstow Parents Association, The Swarthmore College Alumni Association, and Rotary Auxiliary of Kansas City. She moved to Phoenix in April of 2017.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters Laura Clarke-Steffen (Bob Steffen) of Phoenix, AZ, Virginia Clarke of New York, NY, and S. Katherine Clarke of Alexandria, VA . She also leaves three grandchildren, Kathryn Brady, Caroline Brady and Jack Brady all of New York, NY. She was preceded in death by her husband Milton C. Clarke of Kansas City, MO and her brother Charles Brodie of Athens, GA.
A memorial service is scheduled for 3:00 pm Thursday May 24, 2018 at Mountain Park Senior Living, 4475 E Knox Rd, Phoenix, AZ. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dorothy’s life. A memorial is also planned for later in the summer in Kansas City. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Turning Point (Cancer Survivor organization affiliated with the University of Kansas Health System).
