Margarette Yvonne Dickey Sayger, born April 3, 1936 in Marlin, Texas, a descendant of one of the founding families of the Republic of Texas, passed away, peacefully, on Wednesday, 6/1/2016, at Hospice in Ormond Beach, Fl after a short battle with cancer. She was the only child of Elton V. Dickey and Ioma Smith Dickey. She was married to her Waco High School sweetheart Richard O. Sayger on March 16, 1956 until his death on January 21, 2004.
They moved to Merritt Island in 1965 as one of the many families who came here in support of the US space launch activities. Previously, they had lived in Maryland, Alabama, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma and California due to Richard’s military and rocket engineering career.
Yvonne Sayger was a graduate of Baylor University in 1958 and, later, received her Masters degree at Rollins College. She was an elementary school teacher starting at Golfview Elementary in Rockledge, FL in 1965 for one year followed by 35 years at Audubon Elementary on Merritt Island, Fl. She retired in 2001.
She was very proud of being a teacher and was one of the many great Brevard County Teachers who have served our community, so well, for generations. Yvonne was always a hard worker and good provider, as a teacher, a wife, a mother and grandmother. She was greatly loved and admired by her students, friends and family.
Yvonne and Richard Sayger had three sons: Dan, Mark and Jack who are themselves married to Eliana Menendez, Sue Haber and Debbie Fuhls, respectively. All six were MIHS Mustang graduates.
Yvonne and Richard are survived by their ten grandchildren of which they were so proud: Dan’s- (UF grads) Andrea, Shelley, Erik & (UF Jr) Isabella, Mark’s- (UF grad) Katherine, (George Mason grad) Samantha, (High Point Jr) Matthew & (West Point Cadet- Sophomore) James, and Jack’s- (USC grads) Jeret & Calvin. Also, they have six great-grandchildren.
We, her friends and family, loved Yvonne dearly, will miss her greatly and were blessed to have had the privilege of her sharing her life with us.
Funeral services will be conducted at Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home on Merritt Island, FL on Sunday, June 5, 2016. Visitation with refreshments will be 10-11 am, followed by the funeral service 11-12. Entombment will follow services at Florida Memorial Gardens in Rockledge, FL.
Yvonne and family whole-heartedly thank all her health care providers at Cape Canaveral Hospital, Holmes Regional Medical Center, Coquina SNF and Hospice. God bless Yvonne.
