Leon Cowling of Merritt Island, Florida went to heaven on August 26, 2022 after a short illness. He was at home with his family by his side. Leon was 92 years old. In heaven, he awaits his wife of 68 years, Laverne, for their face to face with Jesus.
Leon is preceded in death by both parents, Wesley Dee and Gussie (Schooley) Cowling along with his brother Dale Cowling.
Still celebrating Leon’s life are his sons David and Dan; daughters-in-law Melanie and Trish; grandchildren Haley, Derek, Wesley, and Dannilyn; sister Lou Dillinger Nicholas and her children Lori and Stephen; brother Dale’s children Rebecca, Sue Carol, and Kristy Dale.
Leon came from humble beginnings in rural Arkansas. He married his college sweetheart and stayed by her side for 68 years of marriage. Leon is remembered as a family man, who loved God, and did his best every day. He was a proud member of the First Baptist Church of Merritt Island, joined in 1964.
Leon graduated from Ouachita Baptist University and went on to earn his Masters Degree from the University of Arkansas. He then served 2 years of active duty followed by 25 years in the US Army Reserves.
Leon moved to Merritt Island in 1964 and began his 30 year career as a Brevard County educational administrator. First as a principal of MILA elementary then principal at Lewis Carroll Elementary. He spent 5 years as an assistant superintendent of maintenance and facilities before ending his career at Cape View Elementary. Leon found it very rewarding to move children in a positive direction. After Leon's retirement, he continued to enjoy his family and maintaining his rental properties.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 10 am at First Baptist Church (140 Magnolia Ave. Merritt Island, FL 32952) with a Celebration of Life Service at 10:30am. Burial to follow at Brevard Memorial Park (320 Spring St., Cocoa, FL 32927)
