Born on June 27, 1944, in Providence, RI, Fred earned a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Florida. Upon graduation, he went to work for The Boeing Company, where he contributed to the groundbreaking Apollo Program. He then had a long and successful career as an executive with BellSouth, during which he earned his MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management. Before retiring, he ran a series of telecommunication companies.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Fred was deeply committed to his community. He served on the boards of the United Way, Community Blood Centers of South Florida, Central Brevard Sharing Center, and Field Manor, among others. In addition, he served as an elder and a Sunday school teacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA) for many years.
An avid golfer, classic car collector, and Star Trek fan, Fred found joy in both the practical and the imaginative. His love of science fiction and theology fueled his curiosity and love of learning throughout his life.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Vivian Granger Shay, daughters, Laura Phelan (Kevin) and Elizabeth Hofrichter (Matthew), grandchildren, Annie, Maggie, Arthur, and Linus, and his sister, Charlotte Boc-Brandt. His family will forever remember him for his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering support.
