Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Hall, cherished mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend passed away peacefully at the age of 93. She left us on September 18, 2014 to join her husband, Lester, and youngest son, Tom, in heaven.
Betty was born to Jacob and Dorothy Cramp in Corning, California and was later joined by younger brother, Jack whom she adored. Betty attended local schools and stayed in Corning until a handsome salesman, Lester Hall, happened into the luncheonette she operated with a friend. Love blossomed and she and Lester married on May 16, 1942. His work would take them up and down California, but they called the Le Grand area home and Betty would spend the majority of her life there.
While raising seven children and maintaining a household, Betty also did her share in the family egg business by selling fresh eggs from the basement. Later, she took pleasure in a job as an instructional assistant at Plainsburg School for several years before retiring.
Betty reveled in her retirement years, living with a true spirit of adventure. She loved to travel whether it be to Bali, New Zealand, Italy or Route 66. She maintained a wide variety of interests and was usually delving into more than a few when most her age were slowing down. With gardening, reading, and good repartee as staples, she tried hobbies from wheat weaving to belly dancing. She was a member of Unity of Merced, The Red Hat Society and The Le Grand Garden Club. She thrived in the newness and opportunity that each day brought.
Betty lives on in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Her children, Leslie Chapman (Jack), Steve Hall (Vickee), Mike Hall (Nancy), Shelley Chapman, Jerry Hall (Jackie), and Lisa Meraz (Jesse). She was adored by her 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. As the family matriarch all have drawn on her wisdom and moral compass.
Her family would like to thank the Park Merced staff, Covenant Care, Hinds Hospice, and all her friends for enriching her life.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Hinds Hospice 410 West Main Street #A Merced, CA 95340.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, September 27, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Plainsburg Cemetery in Le Grand.
Arrangements under the direction of Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home, Merced, CA.
