Lydia Martinez, 77, closed her eyes on earth to open them in heaven on November 24, 2011.
Lydia was born in El Paso, TX on December 19, 1933, and a resident of Merced, CA since 1962. Lydia worked as a mother, waitress, field worker, and found her labor of love working with plants and trees at Striblings Nursery. In her later years she earned her Certificate of Completion from Merced Adult School and graduated from Merced City College earning her AA in Landscaping/Horticulture and worked for Cal-Trans. She loved to care for her garden, be surrounded by all her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Many came to know her as their Grannie. Lydia loved her relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ; she also loved her church family and attending church. She loved animals, especially her beloved Chihuahua’s Quita and Penny.
Lydia is deceased by her parents, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters.
Lydia is survived by her 6 children; Gloria Barreto, Yvonne Avila, Angel Barreto, Ricardo Barreto, Ester Crews, and Martha Ann Barreto (granddaughter mom raised as her own). She was Grannie Goose to 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Lydia is also survived by 2 brothers, Danny and Max.
Visitation will be at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home Thursday, December 1, 2011 from 9:00am-10:00am with services immediately following. Burial will follow at Merced Cemetery District, 1300 B St., Merced, CA.
