Baxter LeRoy Johnston, father, grandfather, friend, and man of deep faith, passed away on December 2, 2024, in Merced, California, at the age of 85. Born on December 13, 1938, in Merced, Baxter was the son of LeRoy Sterling Johnston and Erma L. Johnston and the brother of Deanna Thurman.
Baxter’s early years were shaped by his family’s temporary move to Richmond, California, during World War II, where his father worked in the shipyards. After the war, the family returned to Merced, where Baxter completed his schooling and discovered his love for track and agriculture. From a young age, Baxter not only worked on the family farm but also took the lead in its operations.
With a deep connection to the land, Baxter embraced farm life wholeheartedly. Whether he was ranching cattle, fixing tractors, or tackling any task that needed doing, he became a model of self-reliance. His love for agriculture remained steadfast throughout his life.
In his 20s, Baxter began a venture which would become another dimension to his life’s work, opening a barbershop that became a hub of social activity and connection. A skilled barber with a sharp wit and a knack for conversation, he balanced his work at the shop with his duties on the ranch. Baxter continued both professions well into his 80s, embodying a tireless work ethic and a passion for staying active.
A man of strong faith, Baxter lived his beliefs openly, sharing his love for God in prayer and in his characteristic candid style. His directness often reflected his deep care for others and his desire to encourage them toward their best selves.
Known as a rancher and barber to many, Baxter saw himself as an artist, shaping lives through his work and his unique approach to life. His presence was an enigma—complex and unforgettable, yet always genuine.
Baxter is survived by his children, Lee Johnston, Dominico Stanley Johnston, daughter-in-law, Molly Fagundes-Johnston; and grandchildren, Joseph Johnston, Dominic Johnston, Maximo Johnston, along with numerous other grandchildren and great grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and self-reliance, along with countless memories.
Baxter’s impact on those who knew him will not be forgotten. May his soul rest in peace, and may God bless his memory.
Baxter requested a simple graveside service at Helm-Turner Cemetery off of E Savana Rd, near Le Grand, California. Services will start at this location on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 11:00 a.m.
