Ronald Goodwin passed away early Friday morning, August 19, 2022, at Baptist Hospital after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Julie, his daughter, Jessica (Luke) Tullos, his son, Jason (Anna) and his seven grandchildren – Sadie, Fisher, Hudson, Bo, Wesley, and Bear Tullos and Adeline Goodwin. He is also survived by his three brothers, Terry Crowell of Las Vegas, NV; Sonny (Kathy) Goodwin of Dawsonville, GA; and Alan (Nancy) Goodwin of Byhalia, MS. He is preceded in death by his parents, Knox and Nadine Goodwin.
Ron Goodwin graduated from Ridgeway High School (Memphis) in 1974 and attended State Technical Institute for approximately one and a half years. He took a job as a computer operator with Data Communications Corporation, continued to work there after the company was taken over by Jefferson Pilot Data Services, and stayed until the company's move to Colorado in 1995, approximately 19 years. After working a short time as a contractor for FedEx, Ron was hired and worked at FedEx for almost 24 years in various project planning capacities until his retirement in February of 2020. He was a dedicated employee, as evidenced by the longevity of his employment at both places. As anyone who has worked with Ron knows, he was very detail-oriented.
Ron and Julie were married on September 5, 1981. Jessica was born in 1986 and Jason in 1990. Love of his Lord and his family were certainly top priorities in Ron’s life. He was ordained as a deacon at Raleigh Baptist Church shortly after Jessica was born, and later served as a deacon at Kirby Woods Baptist Church in Memphis. He taught 4th grade Sunday School, Royal Ambassadors, and volunteered in various capacities with the children’s groups. Though cancer kept him away from church physically since the start of the pandemic, Ron always watched the online services broadcast from Kirby Woods on Sunday mornings, and kept up with the activities of the church. He was truly an example for his children and his family of how a Godly father should live and raise his children. He was patient, he was kind, he exercised grace and forgiveness, and he honored God in every aspect of his life. Even as he battled cancer in his later years, he never complained about his illness or asked “Why is this happening to me?” We are ever thankful to our Lord for allowing him to be OUR husband, father, beloved PawPaw, and brother. And we anticipate the time when we meet with him again in Glory.
Services for Ron will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2022 at Kirby Woods Baptist Church, 6325 Poplar Avenue in Memphis. The visitation will begin at 10:00AM with the funeral service to follow at 12:00PM. The burial will take place at Memphis Memory Gardens, 6444 Raleigh Lagrange Road in Memphis.
