Robert Edward Dalton, (74) born June 13, 1938 in Somerville, Massachusetts died January 24, 2013 at his Memphis home. Bob retired from the University of Memphis, Center for Instructional Service and Research. He earned a B.A. from American International College (1969) and a M.A. from the University of Memphis (1971). Prior to his career with the University of Memphis, Bob taught school in Memphis, TN and Somerville, TN. He served as Historical Sites Supervisor and Director of Field Services for the Tennessee Historical Commission (1973-1979). He served as head of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History (1979-1981). Bob loved history and authored several books and numerous articles throughout his career. He served in the U.S. Navy (1956-1964) and the U.S. Air Force (1966- 1970).
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Marion Dalton, and his brother, Ronald Dalton. He is survived by his wife, Lynette Dalton, his brother, Lawrence Dalton (Terry) of Woburn, MA, his children, Robert Dalton, II (Martha) of Sulphur, LA, Karen Edkins (Craig) of Fayetteville, GA, and Michael Dalton (Kathy) of Trenton, TN as well as his stepdaughter, Cheryl Leger (Robert) of Collierville, TN and stepson, Robert Condron (Donna) of Milan, TN. In addition, Bob is survived by his twelve grandchildren.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29 at the Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens on Poplar Ave with services at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30 in the chapel, immediately followed by a military service at the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery.
