Rachel West Shannon of Memphis, formerly Kentucky, died on July 22, 2013 at the Baptist Trinity Hospice House. The family will receive guests on Thursday, July 25 from five o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening and funeral services will be Friday, July 26 beginning at ten o’clock in the morning all at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens located at 3700 N. Germantown Road, Memphis, TN 38133. She will be buried at two o’clock in the afternoon in Hazel Cemetery in Hazel, Kentucky following the funeral services. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, W.M.U. Leader, GA & Action Leader and member of the Senior Choir. She was an active community leader, organized a large “neighborhood watch group”, was elected Leader of the City in 1990 and also participated in Senior Olympics. She was an officer and member of MANW, Inc., War Leader and an advisory council at North Precinct. She was active in literary work, reader for the blind on the radio and was volunteer “point of light”. Mrs. Shannon was employed by Plough, Civil Services, and a former teacher and was a member of Mensa Organization. She is survived by her husband Robert L. Shannon; daughter Melanie Lynne Shannon McCarley; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
