Mary Theresa O’Neill Mardis, 100, lifelong Memphian, passed away peacefully in her sleep Sunday, October 25, 2015. A graduate of Sacred Heart High School, Valedictorian of the Class of 1933. Mary worked for the Memphis Police Department 35 years, retiring in 1985 at age 70. Upon her retirement she was given the Key to the City and made Honorary Captain. Every Captain and Mayor she worked under attended the retirement party. Mary was also active in the Lupus Foundation, the Irish Society and MPD Retirement Association. Visitation will be held at Family Funeral Care 4925 Summer Ave on November 5th from 5pm to 7pm with Rosary at 7pm. Funeral Mass will be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception 1695 Central Ave on November 6th at 10:30am. Burial to follow Mass at Calvary Cemetery. Mary is preceded in death by her husband James O. Mardis, Sr., Sisters Sister Ellen Patrick, Patricia O’Neill, Elizabeth O’Neill and Margaret Bolton, Brother Vincent O’Neill, Daughters Mary “Kay” Adams, Margaret Lantrip and Elizabeth Polk. She is survived by son James O. Mardis, Jr., Son-In-Law Henry Lantrip, 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, 2 nieces and 2 nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family request the donations be made to the Memphis Police Association Fallen Officers Fund.
