John Henry Wilson, 81, was born in Holly Springs, MS, on November 30, 1942. He passed away peacefully at the Methodist Hospice Residence in Memphis, Tennessee on July 31, 2024 after a recent hospitalization.
John grew up in Holly Springs and committed his life to Christ at an early age. He met his wife of 61 years, Dottie Smith Wilson of Holly Springs at a young age, and he took her as his bride on August 9, 1963. In recent years, John was an active member of the Germantown Church of Christ, and enjoyed being involved in the group, Men of Faith. He rarely missed an opportunity to fellowship with this group, even up until the last meeting before entering the hospital.
In addition to always having a big smile on his face and giving the best bear hugs, he was also known as someone who had a big heart and was committed to helping and serving others throughout his entire life. John enjoyed being outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, or working in his beautiful and meticulous flower gardens in his yard. Family members were known to fight over the last piece of his famous chocolate or caramel pies at holiday events.
John attended the University of Memphis, and he served in the Army National Guard. He retired from The Brewer Sewing Company after a successful career.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Marie Wilson of Holly Springs, MS, his brother and sister-in-law, William Carter and Christa Wilson of Charleston, SC., and his brother Aubrey Wilson of Germantown, TN. He leaves his wife, Dottie of Memphis, TN, his daughter Courtney Zurfluh (Joe) of Mobile, AL, granddaughter Lillian Zurfluh of Mobile AL, sister Bonnie Wilson Nowlin of Memphis, TN, and Barbara Wilson Beck of Germantown, TN, along with many nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends who all loved and adored him.
A celebration of John’s life is being planned for a future date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Germantown Church of Christ Diaper Ministry.
