Janet Helen "Khaki” Callaway, 71, of Germantown, Tennessee, joined our heavenly Father on September 20, 2023 at 1:29 PM, while being cared for by her excellent medical team with Baptist Hospital- Collierville. Jan was admitted on September 9, 2023 for bi-lateral pneumonia and interstitial lung disease as a complication from chemotherapy. Jan developed Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome after her admittance and passed away after a five year battle with Metastatic Breast Cancer which had spread throughout her bones and bone marrow system. Jan was surrounded by her husband, daughter, son, daughter in law.
Janet was born in Memphis, TN on July 11, 1952 to parents, Robert "Bob" and Helen Murray Briggs. Janet was the first child, and the first daughter. Janet had 2 sisters, Dottie and Mary Nell and Jan was their hero~ they loved her ‘to bits and pieces’! Jan's childhood nickname was "Jani-Annie" or "Annie" given to her by her father who she was crazy about! Jan met her middle school/ high school sweetheart Terry at the age of twelve and they started dating at age thirteen. Terry nostalgically reminisces the first time Jan captured his heart. Terry tells his story with a sweet smile and twinkling blue eyes as he can recall exactly what Jan was wearing. Terry says Jan was wearing brown loafers, navy knee high socks, shorts, and a white shirt with a peter pan collar. With her stylish "bob" hair cut, animated hand gestures, and her infectious smile, she completely captured his heart.
Jan graduated from Central High School in 1970 and enrolled in Methodist Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1976. In 1980, while Jan was the Critical Care Unit Supervisor with Methodist Central Hospital now known as Methodist University Hospital, Jan enrolled in a program to obtain her Bachelors of Science in Nursing.
Jan held a successful career in nursing management for several years before accepting a position as a Field Clinical Engineer with Datascope where she traveled the country to help educate physicians and staff on Intra Aortic Balloon Pump Insertion. Jan was recruited from Datascope to help Medtronic develop and earn market share in ambulatory monitoring which led to the successful start up of Telerhythmics, LLC. As the founder and CEO, Jan quickly earned the distinction of setting the highest standard for patient care with ambulatory cardiac monitoring and won the trust, respect and love of cardiologists, physicians, clinical staff and the patients she served nationwide.
Jan lived an energetic, beautiful, and vibrant life. An insightful woman of exquisite taste, she provided wisdom and encouragement while asking little in return. Terry, absolutely adored and admired her and together they taught their children, Stephanie and Jason, integrity, loyalty and compassion, imbuing them with the confidence necessary to pursue life with a pervasive, contagious fervor. Jan was the spiritual matriarch for her family and made sure that all knew Jesus and His love. Jan was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church since 1995.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Murray and Helen Murray Briggs, and her sister, Dorothy Roberts. Jan is survived by her spouse, Terry Callaway; children, Stephanie Callaway, and Jason Callaway (Kimberly Callaway); grandchildren, Coleman Callaway, Pryce Hundley, Connor Callaway, Preslie Hundley, Pierce Hundley, and Carson Callaway; great-grandchildren, John Ryan Callaway and Indy Callaway; sister, Mary Nell Smith; and nephews, Kip Roberts, Charlie Smith, and Jordan Callaway.
