As a native of Florissant, MO, he is the son of the late John C. and Wilhelmina Schiermeier, and was predeceased by his brother, John J. Schiermeier.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Marilyn; his sons, John Schiermeier (Dianne) and Andrew Schiermeier (Marie-Cécile); his daughter, Lisa Schiermeier-Wood (David); grandsons, Nicholas, Benoît, and Matthieu; step-grandsons, Marshall Wood and Michael Wood (Jessica); and other cherished relatives. He will be missed by family and friends both here and abroad.
Frank started his career in the Air Force where he was stationed at Langley AFB forecasting weather abroad to support overseas deployments of TAC fighter squadrons. He then went on to spend most of his career working for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Atmospheric Modeling Division of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) serving as Meteorologist, Branch Chief, and finally retiring as Division Director in 2001. His love of Russian culture resulted from his experiences as Co-chair of the US/Soviet Union Working Group on Air Pollution Modeling, Instrumentation, and Measurement Methodologies. After retiring, he spent his time in Cary, NC with his wife traveling abroad, gardening, volunteering at WCPE, and taking NCSU extension classes before returning to Virginia in 2018.
Our family is grateful and indebted to the talented transplant doctors and staff at VCU and UNC-CH medical centers for their expertise, care and encouragement throughout the 8 years Frank had his left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and to the home healthcare workers who worked with him.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 am on December 3, 2022, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 105 S. Snead Street, Ashland, VA.
