Donald Eugene Garrett, age 76, of Mechanicsville, Virginia passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of service and commitment to the scouting community.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents, Carl E Garrett and Ruby Irene Garrett.
His scouting journey began in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1956, where he progressed through the ranks, showing concern for others through various leadership roles. As a lifelong learner, Donald pursued various scouting awards including the Scouter's Training Award, Wood Badge beads, the Scouter's Key Award, The Vigil Honor from Nawaka Lodge, the Distinguished Commissioner Award of Merit, and the Silver Beaver Award. Donald's dedication extended beyond his troop, serving in different capacities and mentoring scouts with compassion. In Richmond, Donald continued his involvement in scouting, guiding mentally or physically challenged scouts with care as scoutmaster for Troops 229 and 799. He actively contributed to the Cardinal District, taking on roles such as camp staff coach and chair of the Klondike Derby. Donald's commitment to learning showcased his passion for continuous growth and development in the scouting community.
Donald Garrett's impact on scouting was profound, evident through his leadership roles, training contributions, and dedication to the Order of the Arrow Pamunkey Chapter. His legacy of service, compassion, and commitment to scouting will forever be remembered by those whose lives he touched. Donald's influence and contributions will continue to inspire future generations of scouts to uphold the values he cherished.
Donald Garrett's impact was not only felt in the scouting community but also in his professional life. As a computer operations supervisor for the Virginia Retirement System, a veteran of the army, and a graduate of the Electronic Computer Programming Institute and Old Dominion University, he brought dedication and expertise to his work. His love for dogs and his 36-year career at SunTrust showcased his passion and commitment to various aspects of his life.
Donald is survived by his loving wife, Jan Garrett; son, Bryan Garrett; siblings, Linda Lawrence, Richard Garrett; and Roger Garrett; aunt, Carol Walls; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful for the unwavering support and kindness shown by our dear brother-in-law, Mike Ogilvie; sister-in-law, Deb, as well as, Caleb and Ainsley Ogilvie. Your love and compassion have been a source of strength during this challenging time. Thank you for being our pillars of support.
A visitation for Donald will be held Tuesday, March 19, 2024, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at Woody Funeral Home-Atlee Chapel, 9271 Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116. Where a funeral service will begin at 12:30 pm on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. Burial will follow at Signal Hill Memorial Park, 12360 Hanover Courthouse Road, Hanover, VA 23069.
