Virginia Ruth Lord George (affectionately known as “Miss Sally”) passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2023. She was born in Reilly Springs, Texas, on August 11, 1925. At the age of 18, she married Herman George in March of 1943. She gave birth to two daughters, Linda Joyce, in February 1944, and Pamela Elaine, in April 1946.
Miss Sally was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four sisters (Dot Wells, Jane Stokes, Peggy Booth and Nancy Entrekin); two brothers (Mack and Joe Lord); and infant granddaughter Claudia Elaine Ray.
She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Ray, her sister, Cindy White of McDonough; and her brother and sister-in-law Mike and Barbara Lord of Duluth. She also leaves behind the greatest joys of her life, grandsons Ken and Karen (Andry) Ray of Durham, NC, and Jeff Ray of Decatur, GA, and their children Xak and Nova Ray of Durham, and Lola Bella Ray of Decatur. Miss Sally is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many long-time friends whom she considered part of her family.
Miss Sally was a homemaker until 1958 when she went to work for the Henry County Board of Education in the lunchroom at Stockbridge Elementary School. The Stockbridge High School was built around 1963, and she became its lunchroom manager. She retired from that position at the age of 62.
Miss Sally served her Lord faithfully at the First Baptist Church in Stockbridge for 35 years as a Sunday School teacher and department leader. She became a member of Jodeco Baptist Church in 1986 when her husband, a stroke survivor, rolled his wheelchair down the aisle of the newly formed church and joined it. As a firm believer that a wife’s place was beside her husband, Miss Sally moved her membership that same day. At Jodeco, Miss Sally took on even more responsibility, teaching a Sunday School Class, serving on many committees, and speaking frequently to the enjoyment of all. She was well known for her ability to spontaneously lead a prayer group, teach a class, or prepare a meal with short notice.
Miss Sally was known throughout Henry County as an excellent cook. She frequently answered her phone and was asked to share a recipe from memory - even if it was something she had made up! She was an avid reader and had a green thumb. Strangers would knock at her door asking permission to photograph her flowers. Some even set up easels and painted the house which was covered in brick and stone by her father and her husband in 1951.
A visitation will be held at Haisten Funeral Home Wednesday, February 22, 2023 1:00pm - 3:00pm and 6:00pm - 8:00pm.
