Michael Carl Murphy

Michael Carl Murphy, age 79, of McDonough, GA was welcomed into Heaven on Friday, November 22, 2024. Among those to greet him were his parents, Jack and Dorothy Murphy and his sister Tegwyn Murphy Weigand.

Mike graduated from Sprayberry High School in 1963 and then Furman University in1968. He went on to receive his Master of Divinity degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1972.

Mike's first pastorate was at Sunflower Baptist Church in Sunflower, MS. He then served as a missionary in Guatemala from 1977 to 1985 where he served as church planter and seminary professor.

Mike was a member of the staff at Eastside Baptist Church in Marietta, GA. and later served as Senior Pastor of Clairmont Baptist Church for 17 years before retiring to Hampton, GA.

Not being one to sit still, he continued serving by working with the after-school program at Strong Rock Academy. He was also on staff at Hampton First Baptist as Facilities Manager where he got to combine past handyman experience with this love for his church family.

He loved candle making, woodworking, his motorcycle and keeping his many plants just barely alive.

He was an expert dad-joker, specializing in puns more importantly Mike loved his wife and daughters well. He was a faithful provider, caring and devoted husband and father.

Mike is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean Murphy, children Julie (Mario) Reyna and Lori (Daniel) Graves; sister Martie Danford; nephew Jason Weigand; aunt Marlene Bechtold; four grandchildren and innumerable dear friends.

Mike touched many lives in both the US and in Guatemala. His main ambition was to help others know Jesus as their Savior and to grow in their knowledge of God and His Word. He was an excellent Bible teacher, always making it practical with a touch of humor.

A Celebration of Mike's life will be held at Hampton First Baptist Church, 85 McDonough St., Hampton, GA 30228 on Saturday December 7th at 2:00pm. His family will receive friends one hour prior.
