Mrs. Mary Kate Chappell McMahan of Locust Grove passed away on the 10th of February 2021. The Chappell family has a long history in the Locust Grove and Hampton area. Mary Kate became a member in October of 1931 as the daughter of Robert and Annie Chappell.
Mary enjoyed being outdoors and gardening as well as cooking and baking (talents she regularly shared with her church family at Berea Christian Church) and she was well known for her scrumptious coconut cake.
In 1949, an 18 year old Mary married the love of her life Johnny McMahan and together they shared the next 66 years raising a large and loving family. Mary lived a full and long life. In addition to her undying love for her multi-generational and diverse family, Mary was known for her giant heart that cared for many friends in need. Mary showed her love for others through activities at church and through her career as a nurse. She eventually retired as an RN from South Fulton Hospital.
Those members of Johnny and Mary's family who remain to keep their memories alive include her children Ted McMahan, Terry Willey, Jan (Grayson) Grau, Jean Price and Tim (Janice) McMahan. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and her beloved companion Taz the Pomeranian.
Mary's family will receive friends at Berea Christian Church on Monday February 15, 2021 from 11 am to 1pm with a funeral service to follow at 1pm with Pastor David Fulton officiating.
