Edward Fornasar, age 90, of McDonough, Georgia grew up in Queens, New York City. He shared memories of playing on billboards and hooky-bobbing on the back of trucks with his younger brother Hank and their friends. One of his favorite childhood memories was going to baseball games in New York City with his father. He was a city boy through and through.
Ed bought his first car before he had a driver’s license. The salesman let him buy the car but wouldn’t let him take it off the lot until he came back with a license.
Ed served in the United States Army and spent time in Germany while on active duty. After active duty, he went to work as a civilian in Army Material Command until he retired in 1988.
Ed married Mary McManus in 1957 and they had a very happy marriage. Ed and Mary had 3 children, Tom, Peter & Mary.
They camped a lot as a family, some local in the Shenandoah National Forest of Virginia or going on weeks long trips driving through Upper Michigan, Canada, back thru New York, to visit Granny, then home, camping most of the way. Lots of fishing, hiking and exploring.
Ed loved sports. He taught Tom to throw and catch and eventually to pitch. He coached little league baseball for Pete and Tom. He coached soccer. He broke his ankle showing how to dribble a soccer ball. Ed and his daughter Mary shared a lifelong love of the New York Giants.
Ed & his wife Mary shared a love of cooking, a love that continued for Ed’s entire life. He loved cookbooks and was an adventurous cook. Some of his specialties were anything grilled, pizza, lasagna.
Ed met Paula in Hendersonville NC and fell into her arms, literally. He slipped on the steps leading into the courthouse and she caught him. They dated and then married in November of 1992. Their marriage was fun and loving. They loved to travel together, England, Italy, and an Alaskan Cruise were some of their destinations as well as explorations in the Southeast and Northeast mountains.
One of Ed’s hobbies was collecting and repairing antique clocks. He also loved golf and played as often as he could. There is a framed certificate hanging over his desk to commemorate a Hole-In-One at Broadbay Country Club in Virginia Beach in 1996. Keeping up on the news and politics was important to Ed, he read the newspaper from cover to cover. Ed also loved to dance and liked cars, German cars being his favorite, especially Mercedes.
Ed and Paula have a relaxing welcoming home, not only for friends and family but for birds visiting their many bird feeders. Ed enjoyed having blooming flowers in the garden.
Ed joined his first wife Mary and son Peter in Heaven on Sunday, June 16, 2024.
He is survived by those he so greatly loved; his wife Paula Faye Fornasar, children Thomas Fornasar (Vicki), Mary Fornasar Canty (Brian), Grandchildren Jessica Fornasar Kennedy (Brendan), Caitlin Fornasar (Tyler), Ryan Bell & Logan Bell and great granddaughter Hana Kennedy. Ed also lives on in the hearts of his brother Henry (Hank) Fornasar and his niece Dana Fornasar.
