Mrs. Jenkins was born April 10, 1938 in Locust Grove, Georgia. She attended Locust Grove Elementary School in the former Locust Grove Institute building and had fond memories of those days, especially the Halloween Carnivals. She enjoyed playing with her sisters and many cousins. She graduated from McDonough High School in 1956.
It was there she met JW Jenkins, with whom she would reconnect after he returned from two years of service in the U.S. Navy. They were married at Locust Grove Baptist Church on September 5, 1959.
Their son, Barry, was born in 1960 and daughter Kim came along in 1964.
Mrs. Jenkins passionately loved her family. Their wellbeing was her main focus in life and she loved spending time with them, especially cooking for them. She loved worshiping at the First Baptist Church of McDonough, where, as a younger adult, she enjoyed teaching a first grade Sunday School class and led Sunbeams. Later she attended the Kathleen Madden Sunday School Class where she had many wonderful, caring friends.
In her work life, Mrs. Jenkins worked as a secretary at the Atlanta Army Depot from 1956-1966 where she was offered commendations for her superb attention to details and organizational skills. She later worked as a Tag Clerk for the Henry County Tax Commissioner’s Office from 1972-1986.
Mrs. Jenkins loved gardening and flowers of all kinds, and planted many clippings in her yard from her mother’s home. She was an avid reader and passed the love of reading to her children.
She is well known for her patient, sweet, and kind demeanor, goodness, selflessness, and wisdom, all gifts of grace through her devotion to and love for God. One of her favorite New Testament verses was, “Be doers of the word and not hearers only.” Her family and friends can attest that she lived this verse every day.
She is preceded in death by her parents Frank Thaxton (“Ted”) Hammock and Edna Earl Evans Hammock, and sister Glenda Frankie Hammock Rosser.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, JW Jenkins; son Barry Jenkins (Monica) of McDonough, GA, daughter the Rev. Kim Jenkins of Columbus, GA; sister Miriam Janet Hammock Long of Big Canoe, GA; grandsons Barry Gene (“Buddy”) Jenkins, Jr., (Cynthia), Andrew Jenkins (Angel), and granddaughter Heather Jenkins Estes (Bobby); great-grandchildren Kaleigh Jenkins, Zachary Jenkins, Everett Jenkins, Brantley Jenkins, and Madilyn Estes, nephew Daniel (“Skip”) Long (Rebecca), niece Christina Goodman (Jesse), great nephews and nieces, and many cousins.
