Carolyn Brooks Gongwer of McDonough, Georgia passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. She is survived by her sons Jeff Gongwer (and his wife Sheri) and Steve Gongwer. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Daniel Gongwer (and his wife Claire and their daughter Lydia); Samuel Gongwer (and his wife Madalene and their daughter Hensley); Reid Gongwer; and Riley Gongwer. She is proceeded in death by her husband, Larry Gongwer, her parents, Homer and Nina Brooks, and her brother, Johnny Brooks. She is also survived by other family members and a host of friends who loved her.
Carolyn was married to the love of her life, Larry, for 56 years. They shared a deep love for each other and built a life that displayed a rich, healthy marriage. They displayed a relentless devotion to each other and their family. She loved her sons, Jeff and Steve, who will be forever grateful for her constant support and love for them. Words cannot adequately express their appreciation for her unconditional, self-sacrificing love. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and Christian who was loved and admired by all who knew her. She worked several places, but in her last years of employment worked at Kelly-Springfield.
She was born in Georgia to Homer and Nina Brooks. Possessing fantastic athletic ability, she especially excelled at basketball at Osborne High School. She met Dad while she was still in school, and he was training for his career as a machinist. They fell in love and soon married. After a year, Jeff was born and after a couple of years Steve came along. Carolyn and Larry moved from Cobb County to Clayton County for Dad’s career with Delta Airlines. They built a life together, raised their sons, and went on many adventures before and during their retirement. She was a constant encourager and will forever be appreciated for the positive impact she had on all who had the privilege to know her.
A visitation for Carolyn will be held Monday, December 9, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Haisten Funerals & Cremations, 1745 Zack Hinton Parkway, McDonough, GA 30253, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel. A private family interment will follow.
