David D. Carr

DAVID D. CARR. On Wednesday, August 1, 2019 David D. Carr, beloved husband of the late Carole A. Carr, passed away at age 85. David was born on November 29, 1933 to the late Harry and Marie Carr. He was the dear father of Cathy Merckens and David M. Carr (Angela); grandfather of Samantha and Charlotte Merckens, and Joseph, Justin and Michael Carr; great-grandfather of James Merckens; and devoted friend of Carole Keating. David was the brother of Lois, Phyllis and Carolyn Carr, who are deceased.

David was a US Army veteran stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. After attending John Carroll University, David began a lifelong career at Brennan Industries in 1959 when he joined the company as its second employee. In 1973, he became President of Brennan Industries. He transitioned to Chief Executive Officer in 2008 after appointing his son, Dave M. Carr, as President. Brennan Industries grew into a global corporation with distributors in 50 states and locations worldwide.

David was an ardent supporter of education and healthcare. He served on the Board of Trustees at Gilmour Academy for more than four decades, including terms as Chair of the Development Committee, Vice President of the Gilmour Academy Corporation and, at the time of his death, President of the Gilmour Academy Corporation. In addition to Gilmour, his philanthropy included Cuyahoga Community College and University Hospitals of Cleveland, for which he hosted extravagant benefits at his home in Hunting Valley. After becoming a licensed pyrotechnician, most of these evenings ended with an elaborate fireworks display under his direction.

A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at Our Lady Chapel at Gilmour Academy (2045 SOM Center Road, Gates Mills, Ohio) at 10 a.m. Interment Lake View Cemetery.
