Bob loved woodworking and made beautiful furniture and clocks. He also loved camping and traveling, loving weekly trips in the summer to Hardy Dam. He flew model airplanes in his spare time and had model steam engines at home. He was well-loved by his family, spending time with his children, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Bob attended Lapeer community schools as a child and then served as Air Police in the Air Force for 8 years. He pursued a career in law enforcement, obtaining several professional certificates and degrees. He spent 16 years as a law enforcement officer, including time at Ingham County Sheriff's Department and at Wyeth Laboratories as a security supervisor. He was involved with the Fraternal Order of Police, Mason Masonic Lodge, and the Nazarene Church, and he served as the laypastor in the Methodist Church in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Sheila Smith Schaaf; sister Sally Dufort and brother Michael Schaaf; children Eric (wife Jo, deceased), Anthony (wife Dodie), and Michelle (partner Claude Thomas) Elaine Schaaf; grandchildren Luke, Donald, Jolie, Kira, Ricky, and Tyson (wife Sabrina); four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in his passing by his parents, Elmer Albert Schaaf and Ardith Vivian Schaaf, and his sister, Lori Schaaf Gisenhaver.
The family would especially like to thank Heart to Heart Hospice of Michigan for their care of Bob.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 14th, 2023 at 10 AM at Columbia Road Baptist Church at 5000 West Columbia Road, Mason, MI 48854, with the memorial service held at 11 AM and a luncheon immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed at Columbia Road Baptist Church Missionary Fund in Mason, MI.
