Catherine S. Freres of San Antonio, TX was born on September 13, 1951 in Lansing, MI to the late F. Gerald and Isabelle (Pahl) Oakley. Catherine is survived by her husband Glenn G. Freres; brother John G. (Stephanie) Oakley of Dimondale, MI, and their children Jennifer Osborne, Erin (John) Allwardt, Brooke Oakley, Ashley (Eric) Stanaway, and Megan (Joe) Clarke; sister Theresa M. Layman of Mason, MI and her children Brieanne (Kyle) Hensley, Marissa and Alicia Layman; stepdaughter Linda (Alan) Prochot and their children Joseph (Sarah), Jeffrey and Jillian; stepson Michael (Cathy) Freres and their children Lindsay and Megan Freres; stepson Steven (Gloria) Freres and their children Natalie, Mark and Russell Freres; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Catherine was the manager of the first all-girl gas station for Mobil Oil in Lansing and worked at the Lansing Board of Water and Light prior to leaving Michigan.
Catherine traveled to Houston in the early 1980’s to work for Waste Management and to complete her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at the University of Houston at Clear Lake. Catherine then moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL to be with her husband Richard Sherman and worked as a real estate project manager for Tarragon Corporation. While in Fort Lauderdale Catherine was involved with the Cystic Fibrosis Gold Coast Guild where she served as Treasurer and Co-Chair of the Spring Luncheon. Life led Catherine to San Antonio, TX where she married Glenn in 2007. Catherine and Glenn enjoyed traveling which included two around-the-world cruises where many friendships were made. After coming to San Antonio Catherine was involved with the Ronald McDonald House, San Antonio Restaurant Association, and Ladies’ Auxiliary of the San Antonio Rotary Club. Catherine was a member of the POPs (Parkinson Outreach Program) at Warm Springs where she made numerous friends.
A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., 1320 Catholic Church Rd., Leslie, MI 49251. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 29, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 621 S. Jefferson St., Mason, MI 48854. The family will also receive friends on Saturday, July 30, 2016 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church.
