Known as Betty to her legions of friends and relatives, Elizabeth Rosalle Hornung was born March 12, 1927, on her family's farm outside the small town of Edgar, Wisconsin.
Deciding to become a nurse, Betty attended the St. Agnes Hospital School of Nursing in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, under the U.S. military's Cadet Nurse Corps Program.
After she was graduated in June 1948, Betty went to work at a hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, and from there moved on to Seattle in January 1949. She decided with her older sister Virginia (known as Ginny) to join the U.S. Navy. They were commissioned as ensigns and reported for duty in April 1950 at the naval base in Bremerton, Washington.
Betty would later say that the greatest satisfaction during her military service came at Naval Hospital Mare Island in Vallejo, California, where she treated U.S. Marines wounded in the Korean War.
Upon completing their two-year tour of duty, Betty and Ginny signed up in 1952 for the Alaska Native Service and worked for a year at a hospital in Sitka.
Betty married Edward Ralph Emanuel on June 26, 1954, in Seattle. They were sweethearts right up to the end of their long and happy married life. Before he passed away on March 8, 2018, the last thing Ed said was, “Marrying you was the luckiest thing that ever happened to me.” He often expressed gratitude for the devoted care Betty gave him during his last years.
Betty also kept up a dedicated correspondence with friends and relatives. She had a way of engaging with people that made them warm to her immediately and she maintained many meaningful friendships throughout her life.
During her long nursing career, Betty worked at hospitals in Ellensburg, Port Angeles and Everett.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Ann Marie and Therese, and sons, Ed Jr. and Philip, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and all five of her sisters and two brothers.
A devout Roman Catholic, Betty devoted much of her time and money to charitable causes.
Details of her funeral Mass are still to be determined. Interment will be at Tahoma National Cemetery.
Remembrances can be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (care of St. Mary’s Church in Marysville, Washington).
