Our beloved Mother and Grandmother was born as Audrey on April 19th, 1928 in Ott, Arkansas to Nathaniel and Alice Pendergrass, but she was known by her middle name Doris. Her first name Audrey means noble strength, and her middle name in Greek means “gift”. Not only was Doris a beautiful gift to the world with her kind, caring heart and cheerful, ready smile for everyone, but she was, also, a perfect example of noble strength and grace as she modeled daily following Jesus in her life. She received her eternal rewards and entered into her gorgeous mansion in heaven on the gold streets with our precious Father and Grandfather Edgar Phelps on November 10, 2024.
Doris, her siblings, and her Mother moved to Lowell, WA in 1937 after her Father passed away from an illness. Both of her parents were born again believers in Jesus and believed in God’s provision for their family. Her Father passed away during the Depression, and her Mother found work in Lowell, WA. Her Mother managed to feed seven children by herself during the Depression, and they never went hungry.
She attended Lowell Elementary School, South Junior High School, and graduated from Everett High School in 1945.
Our beloved Mother and Grandmother married our Father and Grandfather, on February 20th, 1948. Edgar Phelps passed away before her on September 25th, 2001 after 53 years of marriage. She devoted herself to faithfully being by his side and taking care of him for the last four years of his life.
Doris retired from Snohomish County P.U.D #1 after 26 years of employment. At the time of her retirement she was Administrative Assistant to the Customer Service Division Director. She was well-liked and highly regarded.
After retirement, and when she and our Father and Grandfather were not traveling in their motor home in the lower 48 states, our precious Mother and Grandmother volunteered at what was then Bethany Home on Broadway. She later volunteered at Providence Hospital on Pacific Avenue in Everett.
Doris was once asked what her hobby was. She proudly replied,” My family and my home.” She truly loved her family, and they were the most important thing to her in the world.
Our adored Mother and Grandmother was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Everett for 28 years. After her move to Marysville, she attended The Grove Church. When she was unable to attend church, she faithfully read her Bible, did her devotions every day, and enjoyed old-fashioned gospel hymns on her Granddaughter’s Smartphone.
She leaves behind adoring daughter, Lynda (Harold) Freilinger; loving son Woody Phelps; grandson, Lonnie Freilinger; cherishing granddaughter, Holly Johnson; numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.
In addition to her beautiful parents and our beloved Father and Grandfather, she was proceeded in death by two lovely sisters, Audie Foster and Joy Hagglund; brothers Ray Ivester, Clarence Pendergrass, Clyde Pendergrass, and Kenneth Pendergrass.
Our cherished Mother and Grandmother is celebrating her heavenly homecoming with our adored Father and Grandfather, her parents, her siblings, and numerous other friends and relatives in a new and glorified body in her palatial mansion in the sky. Though we will miss her; we are, also, very happy for her. Until we meet again dearest Mother and Grandmother. You will never be forgotten!
