Margaretta Gerlaugh Hart, 94, of Martinsville, passed away Friday, February 28, 2014 at King’s Grant Retirement Community where she was a resident. She was born in Henry County (Lanier Farms), February 17, 1920 to Arthur and Margaretta Butt Gerlaugh. She received her teaching degree from Longwood University in 1942 and a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Virginia in 1969. She taught in the Martinsville City School System for 31 years. Mrs. Hart was a member of the Book Review Club, Charity League, Museum of Natural History, Piedmont Arts, SPCA and the Investment Club. She was a life-long member of Christ Episcopal Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Hart; a step-daughter, Mimi Hart Riggan and a brother, Arthur Gerlaugh, Jr. and his wife, Mary Tuggle Gerlaugh.
She is survived by a step-daughter, Lucy Hart Davis of Martinsville; a niece, Beth Gerlaugh Adkins and husband, Tommy of Martinsville and a nephew, Aubrey Lee Gerlaugh and wife, Fran of Marietta, GA; one great-niece, Amanda Gerlaugh; two great nephews, Russell Spence and Daniel Gerlaugh.
A memorial service will be held Monday, March 10, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Roy Polina officiating. Burial will be private.
