Dorothy Smith Weaver, 91, of Kings Way Road, Martinsville passed away on October 3, 2017 at Kings Grant Retirement Community. She was a life-long resident of Martinsville and Henry County with her beloved husband, Milford Anderson Weaver. She was born on August 12, 1926 in Martinsville to the late Enfield Bartley Smith and Erie Young Smith. She was also proceeded in death by her brother, Clarence Reeves Smith.
Dorothy was a Martinsville High School graduate in 1945. She attended Averett College for Women from 1945-1946, now Averett University in Danville, VA. She was employed by E. I. DuPont, Martinsville Plant in August 1946. Upon marriage on June 12, 1948 to Mr. Weaver, she transferred to the E. I. Dupont plant in Richmond while Mr. Weaver completed his education at the University of Richmond. She continued her employment with E. I. DuPont until 1955. Dorothy later served as Corporate Secretary and a member of the Board of Directors of Virginia Blower Company, a business incorporated by her husband, Milford Weaver, and her father, Bartley Smith. Dorothy was also a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother throughout her life.
Dorothy was a charter member of McCabe Memorial Baptist Church where she served in the choir and as an organist for 10 years. She was also a Sunday school teacher and served as a leader of the Women’s Missionary Organization. She later became a charter member of Villa Heights Baptist Church in 1960. She continued to serve as the organist for many years and remained an active member of the choir until 2012. Music was always her greatest joy. Dorothy remained faithful to Sunday school teaching at Villa Heights for over 50 years. She also served in positions with the Women’s Missionary Organization, Music Committee, Nominating Committee, and Stewardship Committee.
Dorothy loved to travel with her husband, friends, and family. Some of her fondest memories are the many Carrier Dealership trips earned by Virginia Blower Company which allowed their travel to many corners of the globe. She was always amazed by all the Lord’s beauty throughout the world.
Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Milford Weaver, of the home; her daughter and son-in-law Cathy Jones and Alan Jones of Norfolk, VA; her son and daughter-in-law, Andy Weaver and Donna Weaver of Collinsville, VA; her grandchildren, Lindsay Miller and her husband Chip Miller, Emily Jones, Bartley Weaver, Kristen Weaver, Emily Dove, Jonathan Dove and his wife Lily Dove, and Zachary Dove; her great grandchildren, Norah Miller, Amelia Dove, and River Dove; her sister, Sue Gusler; and her many special nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Broad Street Christian Church on Thursday, Oct. 5th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., where Dorothy was baptized and began her Christian faith, and at other times at the home of Andy and Donna Weaver. There will be a funeral service held on Friday, Oct. 6th at 11:00 a.m. at Villa Heights Baptist Church followed by a graveside service at Roselawn Cemetery.
