I'm so sorry to find out that Mr. Myers is gone. I was one of his students back in 1984 or 1985, and remember watching Gone With the Wind in class, our class being invited to his house to watch Salem's Lot, and to this day I can still correctly identify and spell every country in Europe thanks to him. I wonder if my love of history as an adult began when I was a student in his classroom. You'll be missed, Mr. Myers.

Margaret, although I did not come to Jim's funeral, I wanted you to know  that Jim will be fondly remembered by me for his many acts of caring and kindness most of all to his Mother (as you well know) but also to his neighbors (including Phyllis),  his many friends, and numerous students. Mr. Myers was the best teacher I ever had.  I vividly remember being in his social studies classes at North  Middle School years ago.  He brought history alive and his storytelling was top notch.  I will never forget learning about the Holocaust and King Henry VIII along with so much else in his class.  What a kind and compassionate man.  

Oh, my dear sweet buddy, I'm definitely left without words for the first time in my life.  I'm still in disbelief that all of this has happened.   We've been friends for over 50 yrs., and I can't imagine not being able to communicate with you or to laugh with you.  You touched my life in such a positive and caring way....thank you, Jim, for being in my life for all of those years.  I just don't know how to say good-bye, and I don't want to say good-bye!!!  You'll forever be in my memories and my heart and will always be loved.

Mr. Myers was such an amazing and kind hearted teacher. His lessons were inspiring and I have such an appreciation for history because of his influence. His soul will live on in the countless students and people he encouraged during his time with us. 

Mr. Myers was indeed a kind and gentle soul, and a truly gifted teacher.  He helped us gain a window into distant lands and a spark of curiosity for other cultures -- this has stuck with me to this day.  I write this from Nairobi, Kenya, the eleventh country in which I have lived.  But Mr. Myers also fostered a great appreciation for our beloved state's history.  I am so proud of being one of his Golden Horseshoe winners -- it was a wonderful experience.  Mr. Myers was hands-down the best teacher I ever had and inspired so many.  Am so grateful that I had the opportunity to be his student and so sad to hear of his passing.  I wish my kids could have had him as their teacher too.

Mr. Myers was an incredible teacher. He was kind, gentle, and compassionate. He was also incredibly passionate about his subject and knew how to inspire curiosity in his students, which is a rare and valuable quality. He was imaginative enough to provide opportunities others would not have considered. What a lasting impact he made.

I will never forget him talking about visiting Hawaii and teaching our class the state fish: humuhumunukunukuapua. He was an exceptionally kind teacher.

What a loss!  Mr. Myers was an awesome teacher ('77-'78) and I was happy to go to Europe on three of his Spring Break Trips.  Being in his class and being able to go on those trips were extremely influential in developing my interests from a travel and career perspective.  I wrote him a note in the spring of '19 to share how he influenced my life and his response told me he remembered every student that ever had the opportunity to sit in his class.  He also remembered how nervous I was on my first ever flight and I was so grateful that his mother sat next to me and kept my nerves in check.  Both are truly missed!

Mr. Myers was a wonderful teacher. He was a very kind and gentle person who made a difficult period in my life a little bit easier. He expanded his students' worldview with his teaching and the trips that he took his class on every year. I feel so lucky to have had him as a teacher.

I am sadden to hear of Mr Myers passing but I know he is now an angel watching over all of us!  I have many fond memories of Mr Myers but the one I hold dear is the love of history and and how he gave me the travel bug ! I went to London with him and from that trip I knew traveling would always be a part of my life! He inspired me to become an exchange student and really learn more about others! I will be forever grateful for him to show me that there is much more to our world than just our own back yard! Sending prayers out to all of his family and friends! Mr Myers will always be with us in spirit ! 🙏 

My heartfelt condolences. Mr. Myers was one of my favorite and one of the best teachers I had in Jr. High and High School. He was kind and generous both as a person and as an instructor. He was way ahead of his time in his teaching techniques and in trying to reach students. He always encouraged our creative impulses and pushed us to be better people and to learn more. I will always have positive memories of Mr. Myers and his classes. 

I was deeply saddened to hear this news. Mr. Myers was the best teacher I ever had and instilled a love of history within me. I was very fortunate to have been a student in his classes during my middle school years at North Middle School. His lessons were amazing and he was a very kind man who cared deeply for his students. Under his teaching, I was able to become a Golden Horseshoe winner. After finishing college and starting my career as a teacher, I was able to correspond with him to let him know that his influence was still felt as I tried to teach my own students as he taught me. Mr. Myers was a wonderful teacher whose legacy and influence lives on! Thank you for being my teacher, Mr. Myers. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. 

Mr. Myers was such a kind teacher and helped foster my love for history. He was my 8th grade teacher. He will always be a part of my memory because I started my first day of student teaching with him on 9/11. We experienced that horrific event together by standing in shock in his classroom looking up at his little box tv on the wall and watching as the towers collapsed. He told me before his next class came in that ‘always remember, we are here for the kids and to always show them we care’. He and I sat in his classroom with children who were scared because their parents worked in DC and at the Pentagon. His kind soul will NEVER be forgotten ❤️

It’s impossible to think of North Junior without thinking of Mr. Myers. He was a large part of my middle school years.  He was a true teacher in every sense of the word. The love he felt for his students was tangible. It was impossible not to be drawn to him. Thanks to him, I can still name and locate every county in West Virginia.  I remember the great love he had for his mother. Now they are together again. The world has lost a teacher and heaven has gained one. Rest In Peace Mr. Myers you must be tired from changing the minds of so many young people.


My condolences to all who are feeling the extraordinary sense of loss in having to say farewell to such a great and gentle man. I will always remember. Those who truly reach us in life are so few that they can be counted on one hand. Mr. Myers certainly was one of those very special people who could reach far. I am deeply saddened by the news of his passing, and I have not nor will I ever forget him.  My many memories of middle school are largely intertwined with him. From Europe to Charleston to the social studies fairs and everyday that we gathered in your classroom, I will never forget. Goodbye sir, and thank you so much for reaching me. 
World History class, NMS 1982-1983

I had Mr. Myers in 8th grade in 1984-1985 at North Middle. He was an exceptional teacher and amazing historian!  He taught Social Studies in a way that kept me engaged and wanting to hear more. To this day I speak of him and our trip to West Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.  He had the calmest voice that I can still hear!  My condolences to his friends and family. Truly a teacher who was doing what he loved!!

My condolences to Mr Myers family and friends. I will always remember Mr Myers for his love of history and the way he shared it with us in the classroom. I can only hope that one day my daughter has a teacher with the same passion that he had. He made me love history more than I would ever realize until I went to Mexico for the 1st time and had to see the Mayan ruins for myself as he always taught with photo slides he had taken over the years. I had the pleasure of attending one of his European trips to Switzerland and Germany, an experience I will never forget. May he Rest In Peace.

Class of 1965.  Memories of our talks at the Class Reunions.  So sorry to hear  of this.   You done so much for your students, Mother, and family, you are special to many,  Thoughts and prayers to the family and friends.

I remember Mr. Myers from my days at North Junior High. He was a great teacher and a kind man. He certainly made an impact in my life.  Even after I left NJH, I would pass by him, working on his car or being out in his yard, when I was out riding my bike. I always enjoyed speaking with him.  I feel lucky to have been one of his students. God bless.

I was sad when several months ago I read from the Martinsburg 1965 Class news that Jim had had a stroke.  Seeing his name reminded me of knowing him from when I moved to Martinsburg in 1963 and became a member of the class of '65 and met him then.   My family was also members of the Presbyterian church and we met his Mother and sister and our families enjoyed knowing each other.  Then a recent follow up said that his Mother had passed away.  I had sent him a card before knowing about his Mother wishing that he was getting better.  Margaret, I know that this has been a long hard time for you--I am wishing that you will find comfort with both losses.  
  Jim was a very good and fun person and I know that he will be remembered and missed by many people.
  Reading the memories here it seems that he was a major influence on many students and that is such a lovely legacy.

My heartfelt condolences to Mr. Myers Family and Friends.  I to was a student of Mr. Myers at North Jr High.   His gift of knowledge and love for teaching made History come to life. Because of this I just love history to this day.  I was amongst the students he took to D.C when King Tuts treasures were on display.  I accidentally fell and scuffed my knee on the cement steps he was very compassionate.  Even when I wasn't in his class he was always looking out for me.  I remember running into him a few times some years ago when I was a substitute teacher aide and he was a substitute teacher. We talked and talked and almost got in trouble for being late to our classes because we talked right thru lunch.  Our loss is Heavens gain because now he is talking to some of those he taught us about.  I will truly miss this wonderful soul.  To his Family, Thank you for sharing Mr. James Myers with us.

It is a rare gift to be taught by a teacher that has a passion for the subject they are teaching!  Mr. Myers was so dedicated to his students that each class he taught made history "come alive"! I was a student in Mr. Myers WV history class at North Middle School in the 1976-77 school year.  That was the year that the number of The Golden Horshoe winners increased to five in Berkeley County. I’m proud to say that thanks to Mr. Myers teachings, I was tied for first place and all five of us were his students. Because he had so many winners through the years, he was deemed an honorary knight at the same award ceremony that the five of us attended.  He was such a great teacher and made the whole experience so special and memorable. I’m  so grateful to have known him and so sorry for his family’s loss.  May he Rest In Peace!

Oh my dear, sweet Mr. Myers, I have the best memories of you from North Jr High back in the mid 1970’s. Although I wasn’t one of the ones that you took to Charleston for the Golden Horseshoe competition, you took four of my friends and they all were winners. You were the  most dedicated teacher and loved by all your students. May you be in your glory in Heaven with your loved ones today.
