James joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17, retiring as a Master Gunnery Sergeant after 30 years of active service. He then worked for Safeway, Inc., retiring as a Seafood Department Manager after 17 years.
In his free time, James enjoyed playing shuffleboard in the evenings with his loving wife of 45 years, Lanette. When the weather was nice, he preferred to spend time in his garden. James was also an active member of the Charles Town VFW, where he enjoyed playing the slot machines.
James is survived by his wife, Lanette of Martinsburg; a daughter, Victoria (and Fred) Browner of Madison, WI; a son, James (and Sandra) Gavney Jr. of San Francisco, CA; two step-sons: Eric (and Michelle) Truman of Sterling, VA and Brent (and Kristy) Truman of Indiana, PA; as well as five grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by three brothers: Robert “Bob” Gavney, Willie Gavney, John Gavney; and one grandchild.
Family will receive visitors in the chapel of Rosedale Funeral Home on Saturday, August 13 from 4pm until 6:30pm.
